What it is

Dysport is botulinum toxin type A, like Botox. It temporarily relaxes the muscle it's placed in. When the muscle stops creasing the skin, the line above it softens.

It spreads a little further from each injection point, which can suit a broad forehead where an even result matters. It also tends to start working a day or two sooner than Botox.

What it can do for you

It treats the lines that come from movement, mostly in the upper face.

  • Forehead lines soften evenly across a broad forehead.
  • The two vertical lines between your brows relax.
  • Crow's feet ease when you smile.
  • A larger area can be covered with fewer injection points.

Is it right for me?

Most healthy adults are good candidates. If you've had Botox before, tell us how it went. That helps your provider decide whether Dysport is worth trying.

Not recommended if

You're pregnant or breastfeeding, have a neuromuscular condition, have an infection where you'd be treated, or are allergic to cow's milk protein. Lines that stay when your face is at rest may need a different treatment.

Who does your treatment

Injections by a nurse practitioner.

Brooke, our nurse practitioner injector, assesses your face first and then chooses the product. If Dysport is the right fit, she keeps a first treatment conservative and checks the result with you at two weeks.

Before and after your appointment

A few simple guidelines.

The week before

  1. If your doctor agrees, pause fish oil, vitamin E and high-dose anti-inflammatories for about a week. They can make bruising more likely.
  2. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your visit.
  3. Tell us about any recent illness, vaccinations or dental work.

The 24 hours after

  1. Stay upright for four hours.
  2. Don't rub, massage or press on the treated areas.
  3. Skip hard workouts, saunas and alcohol for a day.
  4. Small bumps settle within an hour. A bruise can take a few days.
  5. Judge the result at two weeks. We'll book your follow-up then.

Questions

The ones we hear most.

How is Dysport different from Botox?

It works the same way but spreads a little further from each injection point. That can help on a broad forehead and is less suited to very small, precise areas.

Does Dysport work faster than Botox?

Often a little. Most people notice a change in two to five days, and the full effect shows at about two weeks.

How long does Dysport last?

Usually three to four months. As the muscle starts moving again, the lines gradually return to how they were.

Who shouldn't have Dysport?

Anyone allergic to cow's milk protein, as well as anyone pregnant, breastfeeding or with a neuromuscular condition. We go through your medical history before anything is injected.

Can I switch between Botox and Dysport?

Yes. If one seems to wear off sooner than it used to, trying another is a reasonable next step. We'll note what you had so we can compare.
