What it is
A chemical peel is an acid solution applied to your skin for a set time. It loosens the outer layer of damaged cells. Over the next few days, that layer sheds and newer skin takes its place.
Peels come in different strengths. A light peel may leave you slightly pink for a day. A deeper peel means visible peeling for about a week. Your provider will match the strength to your skin and your schedule.

Is it right for me?
Most people can have a light peel. Deeper peels need more care in planning, especially on darker skin tones. Your provider will look at your skin and history before recommending one.
Not recommended if
You're pregnant or breastfeeding, have taken isotretinoin in the last six months, have an active cold sore, rash or infection in the area, have a recent sunburn, or have had a bad reaction to a peel before.

Before and after your appointment
A few simple guidelines.
The week before
- Stop retinoids and exfoliating acids about five days before.
- Avoid tanning, waxing and strong sun exposure.
- If you get cold sores, tell us. You may need an antiviral first.
The week after
- Let the skin peel on its own. Don't pick or pull at it.
- Use a gentle cleanser and a plain moisturizer.
- Wear sunscreen every day, and stay out of strong sun.
- Hold off on retinoids and scrubs until the peeling has stopped.
- Some tightness and redness is normal for a few days.

Will my face actually peel after a chemical peel?
It depends on the peel. Light peels may only cause some flaking, while a deeper peel peels visibly for about a week.
Does a chemical peel sting?
Most people feel warmth or tingling for a few minutes while the solution is on. It eases once it's removed.
How many chemical peels will I need?
Many people do a short series and then two to four peels a year. Your provider will suggest a plan for your skin.
Can I wear makeup after a chemical peel?
After a light peel, usually the next day. After a deeper peel, it's best to wait until the peeling has finished.
Are chemical peels safe for darker skin?
Many are, with the right product and strength. That's why your provider assesses your skin before choosing one.
