What it is

Dermaplaning is a manual exfoliation. Your aesthetician holds a sterile blade at a shallow angle and glides it across your skin. It lifts away dead surface cells and the fine hair many people call peach fuzz.

It feels calm, a little like a light brushing. Afterward, skin looks brighter and feels smooth. Makeup and skincare go on more evenly for the next few weeks.

What it can do for you

Dermaplaning works on the very surface of the skin.

  • Dull skin looks brighter straight away.
  • Fine facial hair is removed.
  • Makeup sits more smoothly.
  • Serums and moisturizers absorb better.

Is it right for me?

Dermaplaning suits most people with dry, dull or normal skin. It can be done on its own or before a facial or light peel.

Not recommended if

You have active acne or breakouts, a cold sore, rash, sunburn or infection on your face, or you've taken isotretinoin recently. Very sensitive or reactive skin may need a gentler option.

Who does your treatment

A steady hand from our aesthetician.

Abby, our medical aesthetician and senior laser technician, does your dermaplaning. She'll check your skin first and tell you if another treatment would suit it better that day.

Before and after your appointment

A few simple guidelines.

The days before

  1. Stop retinoids and exfoliating acids about three days before.
  2. Avoid tanning and strong sun exposure.
  3. Skip waxing or threading on your face that week.

The 24 hours after

  1. Your skin may look a little pink for a few hours.
  2. Use a gentle cleanser and a good moisturizer.
  3. Hold off on scrubs, acids and retinoids for a couple of days.
  4. Wear sunscreen every day. Fresh skin burns more easily.

Questions

The ones we hear most.

Will my facial hair grow back thicker after dermaplaning?

No. Fine facial hair grows back the same texture and color. It only feels different at first because it has a blunt tip.

Does dermaplaning hurt?

No. Most people describe it as a light scraping or brushing.

How often can I have dermaplaning?

Every four to six weeks. That matches how quickly the surface layer of your skin renews.

Can dermaplaning be done with a HydraFacial?

Yes. Many people add it before a facial so the serums reach fresh skin.
