What it is
Dermal fillers are a soft gel made of hyaluronic acid, a sugar your skin already makes. Placed under the skin, the gel adds volume and holds water, which restores shape where it has thinned out.
Your body breaks the gel down slowly over time. That makes filler a gradual, adjustable way to change your face. If you ever want it gone sooner, hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved.
What it can do for you
Filler replaces volume. It doesn't stop movement, so it's often paired with a neuromodulator.
- Lips gain shape, definition or a little more fullness.
- Cheeks regain the lift they had a few years ago.
- A chin or jawline looks more defined in profile.
- Hollows under the eyes look less tired.
- Deeper folds around the mouth soften.
Is it right for me?
Filler suits people who have lost volume or want a little more structure. Your provider will look at your whole face before deciding where filler would help. If what you want needs surgery, we'll refer you to our sister practice, Stone Surgical Arts.
Not recommended if
You're pregnant or breastfeeding, have an infection or cold sore near the area, have a bleeding disorder, or have had a reaction to hyaluronic acid or lidocaine before.
Who does your treatment
Planned by a nurse practitioner.
Brooke, our nurse practitioner injector, maps your face before she places any filler. She would rather build a result over two visits than overfill in one.
Before and after your appointment
A few simple guidelines.
The week before
- If your doctor agrees, pause fish oil, vitamin E and anti-inflammatories for about a week to lower the chance of bruising.
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours beforehand.
- If you get cold sores and are having your lips treated, tell us. You may need an antiviral first.
- Plan around big events. Give yourself two weeks for swelling to settle.
The 48 hours after
- A cold compress for a few minutes at a time helps with swelling.
- Avoid hard workouts, saunas and alcohol for a day or two.
- Try not to sleep face-down or press on the area.
- Some swelling, tenderness or bruising is normal for a few days.
- The result settles at about two weeks. We'll see you then.

Will dermal fillers look natural?
That's the point of planning around your face. We start with the amount you need, not the amount a syringe holds.
Do dermal filler injections hurt?
Most fillers contain a local anesthetic, and we can use numbing cream too. Lips are the most sensitive area, and most people find it very manageable.
How long do dermal fillers last?
Usually six to eighteen months, depending on the product and the area. Lips tend to fade sooner than cheeks or the chin.
Can dermal filler be reversed?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with an enzyme if you're unhappy with it or if there's a problem.
When will swelling from lip or cheek filler go down?
Most swelling eases in one to three days. The final shape shows at about two weeks.
